Cinema Experience at BH2 Odeon: A Disabled Customer's Review

Last night, I went to see Venom at the BH2 Odeon. Aside from enjoying the film, I wanted to share some thoughts on the accessibility and experience as a disabled customer.

Entrance & Navigation:

I've visited the BH2 Odeon a few times before, and last night, my mum and I were dropped off to avoid the high parking fees. BH2 has underground parking with a lift that connects all floors, including the cinema’s entrance on Level 1.

The lighting shifts from the bright main walkway to a cool, blue hue in the Odeon lobby, matching the brand's aesthetic. This visual contrast can be a bit overwhelming for those with sensory sensitivities. The lobby is open, with a Costa Coffee to the right and self-service ticket machines that don’t obstruct entry. However, during busy times, the lobby might become crowded, which could impact navigation.

A lift and escalator take you to the screens, and a staff member at the escalator checks tickets and guides guests to the correct screen.

Seating & Space:

We were in Screen 4, where there are two heavy doors that required effort to open, especially challenging if I were alone. Seating options include three different types, and we chose the standard seats, which were comfortable with good back support. There are also wheelchair spaces with adjacent companion seating for carers.

Visual and Sensory Experience:

The lighting inside the screen was dimmed, with floor lights for navigation. The sound was good and manageable without noise-cancelling headphones. The transition between lighting in different areas (lobby to screen and back) might be intense for those with sensory processing needs, particularly when leaving the theater.

Staff Support:

According to Odeon’s website, they offer accessible options, including wheelchair-friendly seating and audio description for some films. While the staff were friendly and welcoming, I have found that accessibility can vary by location, and consistent training could improve the experience across Odeons.

Facilities:

The building is relatively new, and the bathrooms were clean and inviting.

Chandy’s Rating (Out of 5 Chandy’s): 🍺🍺🍺🍺

Brief Summary:

BH2 Odeon provides a generally accessible cinema experience with friendly staff and good facilities, though there’s room for improvement in staff training and sensory accessibility.
